Documents Required for Applying for Driving Licence:

1. Two passport copies with valid Dubai residence visa
2. Original Emirates ID card and copy of front and back
3. 2 passport size photographs
4. Eye Test receipt (Eye test can be done at EDI or at any one of the registered optical centers)

Minimum age requirement for file opening – 17 1/2 years for LMV and 17 years for Motorcycle.

*In case your sponsor is an individual, the passport and visa copy of your sponsor is also required.

1.Registration for driving license course is a simple process that starts with opening your RTA file by providing all the necessary documents and eye test receipt. Registration can be done by visiting any of the authorized driving institutes or by registering online. The staff at the respective driving schools will assist you in arranging eye tests and photographs within their premises and you will get RTA learner’s permit within no time. This must be carried with you in your training.

2. Theory Test: The training course begins with theory lectures and it is mandatory to take all the lectures for 8 hours before starting practical training classes. The theory test is carried out at the authorized driving schools. A total of 35 questions on road signals, hazards, and guidelines on safe-driving will be asked in either English, Arabic or Urdu. Candidates who cannot read the touch-screen or are not computer literate can take the examination orally.

  • The first segment with 17 questions focuses on general traffic situations, and the candidate will need to answer a minimum of 11 correct to pass.
  • The second segment has 18 questions related to the specific driving license the candidate requires and a minimum of 12 correct answers are required to be eligible for the road test.
  • From July 2015, a new segment was added to the Theory test. Called Risks Recognition Test, the test contains a few videos that depict specific environmental conditions and asks the driver how he/she can cope with them.

3. Parking Test: There is a pre-evaluation test for students who have signed up for 30 and 20 classes to evaluate their driving experience. After passing the theory test and pre-evaluation test (if required), students can begin their practical training.

After your practical training classes, your course in charge will advise you to book your RTA parking test and assessment test. After clearing your assessment test and parking test, you will complete your highway training before going for the final road test.

4. Road Test: On the date assigned, go with your passport, driving file, two photos to the RTA Licence Section as advised by your driving school. Fill up an application form and submit fees (around Dh200 for the road test). When your name is called out, go along with the other three candidates and the RTA inspector to the designated car. You will be given just a few minutes to demonstrate your driving skills.

If you fail, you will have to register with your driving school for at least seven more classes and get a new road test date.

If you pass, collect the approval paper from your inspector and go to the Pass Counter. Submit a suitable ID and Dh100. Collect your test file and submit to the Control Counter. After processing, pay the required fee. In a few minutes, you will receive your DL and be eligible to drive in Dubai and the UAE. Congratulations!

Important Points to Remember about Getting Driving Licence:

1. Students who do not possess any driving license are considered as “Beginner” and thus have to register for 20 hours,  40 classes to get UAE driving license.

2. Students possessing their country’s license which is 2 – 5 years old have to take 15 hours session (30 classes).

3. Students possessing their country’s license which is more than 5 years old have to take 10 hours sessions (20 classes).

4. Students can opt to register for either Automatic or Manual gear transmission for their car driving license. However, please note that Automatic license holders are not allowed to drive a Manual gear vehicle.

5. There is a pre- evaluation test for 15 hours session and 10 hours session classes registered students to evaluate their driving experience.

6. Simulator Training: All students registered for 20 hours sessions (40 Classes) will have to attend 1 session of Simulator prior to starting their training classes.

7. People with a valid driving license from selected 33 countries can convert their driving license at RTA office. People having nationalities and driving licenses of Kuwait, Saudi, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Germany, France, Ireland, Holland, Italy, Britain, *Turkey, *Greece, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Romania, Finland, Portugal, **Luxembourg, **Slovakia, **China, *Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, *South Korea, *Japan, New Zealand, Australia can convert their driving license for Dubai Driving License at RTA office.

The people from countries indicated by a star (*) are required to get a translation of the license done from their Consulate.

People from countries indicated by (**) are required to submit a translated letter from any authorized legal translation office. The required documents for conversion are a valid original driving license, valid residence visa issued by Dubai, a completed form for replacement of license, No Objection letter from sponsor to replace license and Optometry form accredited by the health authority in Emirate Location.
